Comprehensive Center for Brain Health Cognitive Neurology Division Instructor/Trainee, Research/Clinical JOB DESCRIPTION GENERAL SUMMARY: The Comprehensive Center for Brain Health (CCBH), part of the Cognitive Neurology Division in the Department of Neurology, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is seeking an individual interested in pursuing post-residency training in research and clinical care in brain health and neurodegenerative disease. CCBH is directed by Dr James E. Galvin, MD, MPH, Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. CCBH is a state-of-the-art 13,000 square foot clinical research facility based in Boca Raton, FL (55 miles north of Miami). This position is 80% research and 20% clinical and the individual will work as part of a team to study the pathobiology and clinical-cognitive characterization of healthy brain aging and neurodegenerative disease. Research duties include working with the PI/Research Faculty on NIH-, industry-, and privately funded research projects and developing independent projects that align with the goals of the laboratory, under the guidance of PI/Research Faculty. This is a full-time position which will involve working in close collaboration with the PI/Research Faculty for projects that focus on conducting deep phenotyping, fluid and imaging biomarkers, developing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, and exploring reasons for health disparities in the areas of brain health and neurodegenerative disease. Ensure the accurate execution of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPPA and required obligations to subject, Principal Investigator, research team and the sponsor. Directly interface with subjects and the Principal Investigator in support of the research studies. The Fellow is expected to write and publish in peer-reviewed journals, attend and present at regional, national and international meetings, and develop a career development award application to NIH. Specific tasks expected include: Pursue research in an ethically responsible manner. Critically assess the published research literature in a selected area. Acquire the fundamental principles of statistical analysis and research design and become familiar with statistical and graphing software packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Python, Stata, R). Formulate research designs capable of addressing these questions that are a) feasible, b) suited to the topic and environment of investigation, c) innovative with high potential impact, and e) offer the potential translational from bench to bedside or bedside to community. Understand how to successfully implement a research program, acquire practical experience in writing scientific papers and grants (revising and editing for maximal clarity and impact), establishing collaborations, apportioning co-authorships equitably, and supervising research assistants.
Clinical duties include working with PI/Clinical Staff caring for older adults with various cognitive disorders in an outpatient transdisciplinary collaborative care model. There are no inpatient responsibilities. Over the course of the fellowship, the fellow will increase independence to establish their own clinical practice, under the guidance of the PI/Clinical Staff. The Fellow is expected to gain proficiency in neurodegenerative disease management through mentored patient care. Specific tasks expected include: Work with the CCBH clinicians, an interdisciplinary specialty clinic of neurologist, nurse practitioners, social workers, neuropsychologists and physical therapists in a collaborative care model to provide outstanding, expert diagnostic workups, treatment plans including non-pharmacological approaches, individual, couples, and group-psychotherapy, falls prevention, advanced care planning, and dementia case management. Be trained in dementia and frailty assessments, receive certification in the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) and United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), learn to administer and interpret neuropsychological testing, improve skills in performing a neurologic examination, develop a differential diagnosis, and how to disclose a dementia diagnosis to a patient and family. Additionally, the Fellow will be expected to participate in educational and outreach activities of the Center including teaching students, interns, residents; assisting in recruitment and retention activities; and providing educational and learning opportunities to the lay public. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS): Education and experience: Requires an MD degree from a recognized accredited University (or foreign equivalent). Completion of a ACGME-accredited Neurology, Psychiatry or Geriatric Medicine residency USA citizen or USA Legal resident Must be eligible for Florida State Medical License.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Good communications skills (face to face, over the phone and in writing) Excellent customer service skills Ability to work collaboratively with other employees. Good organizational skills. Fluency in Spanish is desirable, but not required
WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS Work conditions: work is normally performed in an indoor office environment. Subject to frequent interruptions. Physical Activity Requirements: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or by telephone. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate keyboard and other office equipment. Reaching to retrieve and maintain files. Bending, pushing, moving and lifting files, documents and objects weighing up to approximately 15-20 pounds.
