At one point, did you have very, very high expectations for your marriage? Has reality met your marriage and now you find yourself wondering aloud, “Where is the man or woman that I married?” or “Is this all my marriage is going to ever be?” What are expectations? Does your spouse even know that you had them for him or for her? There are many things that couples experience in marriage and one of them is disillusionment. What happens to our marriages when we no longer have expectations of our husbands or our wives at all? How do you handle it when your spouse is not able or outright refuses to play the role that you cast them in from Day 1 of your marriage? Are expectations the way you think your marriage will look, or the way you want it to look? The two can be very different! People draw their marital expectations from two wells. One is courtship. If courtship was wonderful and starry-eyed, why would you expect marriage to your husband or wife to be otherwise? But think back to your courtship. Wasn't it largely a mirage? How do you handle your disappointment when you discover that your early dreams of marital bliss were more illusion than reality? Why isn't your marriage turning out the way you so carefully planned? How have your parents affected and influenced your marital expectations? How much of our expectations in our marriages are rooted in a painful childhood? Are we trying to resolve our childhood issues and challenges through our marriages? This is going to be one heck of a show by the grace of God. Listen in and really take a look at you and the role that your expectations are playing in the success or lack of it in your marriage in 2016?
